| | | Why I wrote this help file I've used Altavista Discovery 1.1 Search Engine (AD) for a few years, but when I tried AD on Windows 2000 I came across some glitches. Luckily I was able to fix a few of 'em and thought it a good idea to document it for public use. I'll try 'n guide you through the installing and configuration issues based on my sobre knowledge of AD itself & the W2Kpro HKLM's. About the Altavista Discovery 1.1 Search Engine I've used AD as an invaluable aid, expanding the effectivity of my searches in both my professional and personal workspaces. It is fast, provides you with the same interface Altavista has, includes advanced queries including use of booleans. It will index and query plaintext and related file formats, binaries, .pdf's (without a necessary 3rd party plugin or extension), Ms Office files, well everything from .a to .z, across disks, LAN, Usenet, WWW, you name it. * It will also index your Eudora, Exchange, Netscape or Outlook mailboxes and show messages with it's own viewer, so there's no need to start the MUA first. Acknowledgements My sincere gratitude goes out to a certain repository, where I found the setup files after 3 weeks worth of searching the internet for the files. Furthermore I'd like to extend my gratitude to the people at a certain german site where I read the clues for the "Downloaded Files.txt" and more. *If you would be willing to provide a mirror for this website and/or the software, I'll extend my best wishes to you as well. More information Since it is kinda old software, and Altavista have chosen not to support it anymore, there's a few snippets of information lying around. You just have got to search hard for it. (Now what tool would you use for that?) :-] At least a hint is provided at one of Compaq's research sites, they have worked for Altavista on this baby. |
